Ford Becomes First Automaker to Capture CO2 for Foam and Plastics in Cars

In brief: Ford has become the first automaker to formulate and test foam and plastic components derived from captured carbon dioxide emissions.

The successful formulation of the CO2 feedstock-based materials is the important first step towards using those materials in manufacture, Ford says. The company expects these biomaterials to begin entering production in Ford vehicles within five years.

The foam is formulated with up to 50 percent CO2-based polyols and is meeting rigorous automotive test standards. It could be used in seating materials, underhood applications, and more. The potential for reducing petroleum use by more than 600 million pounds annually is real, Ford says.

Ford began working with the captured CO2 uses in 2013, in concert with several collaborators at other companies, suppliers, and universities. Novomer, one of these partners, is commercializing a catalyst system that transforms waste CO2 into low-cost polymers for a variety of applications.

The polymers made from Novomer's process are cheaper and of equal or better performance to petroleum-derived polymers.
