The New Plural of Prius -- "Prii"
With more and more of it hybrid vehicles on the road, Toyota decided it was time to come up with a plural for "Prius." Apparently unable or unwilling to make the decision itself, the company opened it up to the voting public. And the public has spoken.
From now on, anytime you see more than one Prius, you must refer to them as "Prii." That was the winner with 25% of the 1.8 million ballots cast.
Prii beat out using "Prius" for both the singular and the plural by just one percentage point. Other choices included "Priuses," "Prien" and "Prium."
"Prii becomes the word not only endorsed by the public who chose it, but also as the term recognized by Toyota," Toyota said in a statement.
"Community has always been a big part of the Prius brand, so it was only fitting that we invite the online communities to participate in the plural discussion," said Colin Morisako, advertising manager for Toyota. "The people have spoken -- Prii will be the accepted term used to describe multiple Prius vehicles going forward."
Even Dictionary.com has taken note, updating its "Prius" definition to include the new plural "Prii."
