Hypermiler Gerdes Crosses U.S. on 38 Gallons of Gasoline

Gerdes completed the drive from San Diego, California to Jekyll Island, Georgia in only six days (Dec. 26-Jan 1) and took the EPA-rated 40mpg Sonata Hybrid to a hyped 61.42mpg using his skills as a hypermiler. Gerdes totaled 1,221.2 miles on a single tank before refueling and completing the trip of 2,339.5 miles.

The Sonata features Hyundai's Blue Drive in a full parallel hybrid system with a 2.4L engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, 30kW motor, and lithium-polymer batteries.
