In brief: The EfficientDynamics plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) from BMW will enter production by 2013, insiders at BMW are saying.

The word

The cumbersome name notwithstanding, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics (VED) concept was introduced in Frankfurt in 2009. The unusually-styled car caught some buzz as an interesting PHEV with a unique 2+2 concept.
The 2+2 refers to BMW's use of twin electric motors, a battery pack, and a turbo-diesel range-extender.
Insiders at Edmunds Inside Line say that the car will be in production by 2013 and may be BMW's second-ever supercar, entering ranks with the infamous M1.
Production is likely to be small, somewhere around 5,000 or so units. The concept will see some changes, obviously, but insiders expect the power and speed to only increase as the powertrain is fine-tuned.
And so ...
Very cool and sleek, but probably priced out of range for most regular folk.
