Smart to Offer Lease of ForTwo ICE at $169/month in U.S.

The word

Smart, after the fiasco with the $99/month purchase plan, has decided to offer a lease program instead. The lease is for 36 months at $169/month with $999 down and $595 in acquisition fees required.

So for $1,594 plus $169/month for 36 months ($6,084), you get the use of a Smart for three years. That $7,678 is about half the total purchase price of the car, so it is at least appealing to many potential drivers.

The deal is available until the end of February at the 77 Smart dealers throughout the U.S.

And so ...

Smart's original $99/month purchase plan resulted in 42% lower sales and many complaints that the requirements to get the 4.2% financing were too steep.
