Mazda To Introduce 1.3L Direct Injection Gas Engine As 1st SKYACTIVE-G

In brief: Mazda Motor Corp is introducing its first next-generation SKYACTIV technology as the SKYACTIVE-G 1.3L direct-injection gasoline engine.

Mazda unveiled the engine at the Automotive Engineering Exposition in Tokyo, Japan over the weekend. The SKYACTIV-G 1.3 features a high compression ratio of 14.0:1 and high efficiency, especially under high load and low RPMs.

Several new technologies are present to prevent the knocking often associated with high-load, low RPM operations in small gasoline engines. These include piston cavities designed to support optimized combustion and multi-hole injectors to enable precise fuel injection control.

The soon-to-be-released Mazda Demio (known here as the Mazda2) in Japan will see the new engine first. The car will also feature stop-start anti-idling technology (i-stop) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) giving the car fuel economy equivalent to 71mpg US on Japan's 10-15 mode cycle.

The engine is the subject of more than 130 patents from Mazda.
