The four engines announced for the 2011 F-150 pickup truck include two V6 models, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and a new 3.7L V6. Two V8 models are also to be offered: the 5.0L V8 and 6.2L V8. All engines are at least 20% more efficient than their predecessors.
The 3.7L and 5.0L V6 and V8 (respectively) are also in the 2011 Mustang.
The 3.5L EcoBoost uses both turbo-charging and direct injection and will offer an 11,300 pound towing capacity, equal to the 6.2L V8, while giving a 20% better fuel efficiency rating than the smaller 5.4L V8.
The 3.5L EcoBoost is the same engine as is being used in cars with modifications for pickup truck use, such as cast-iron manifolds and heavier-duty turbochargers.
And so ...
Trucks and SUVs don't appear to be leaving American highways anytime soon as consumers continue to demand them, but they are also demanding that they be more efficient and Ford appears to be working hard to oblige.
