Camaro Winning Retro Sports Car Battle with Mustang

Breaking News

It is a classic battle of pony cars -- the Ford Mustang vs. the Chevrolet Camaro. As far as sales, it appears the Camaro is looking at the Mustang in its rearview mirror.

Automotive News quotes a report from Bloomberg that says the Camaro has outsold the Mustang by 33% this year.

The Mustang was the best-selling sports car in the U.S. for 24 years until last year when the Camaro overtook it.

"The Camaro has a more modern feel and seems to draw more attention from a younger age group," said Jeff Schuster, an automotive analyst with J.D. Power & Associates.

Ford restyled the Mustang in 2005 to look like the original fastback cars from the 60s. Chevrolet followed suit with the Camaro for the 2010 model year.

"They have a huge, loyal base with the Mustang," said John Fitzpatrick, the Camaro's marketing manager. "We are starting to chip away at that."

Ford is set to redesign the Mustang in 2014, which should reverse the current trend.

"As the Camaro starts to age and the Mustang is redesigned, that will heat up the battle," Schuster said. "We see the Mustang regaining its No. 1 position when it's redesigned, but it will be close."
