Cadillac Ready to Take on BMW with New ATS
Spy photos have been released of a new Cadillac that will challenge the BMW 3-Series in the U.S. The car, expected to be called the ATS, will hit showrooms late next year.
The car is cloaked in black wrapping, but the experts at Automotive News were able to see that it "will continue to evolve Cadillac's chiseled arts and science styling theme."
The car was approved for development before General Motors' bankruptcy. GM management said the car was aimed at 3-series buyers. Specifically mentioned were the rear wheel drive configuration; the car's dimensions, similar in size to the 3 series; and its performance characteristics.
The ATS will be Cadillac's entry-level model, positioned below the CTS. That car will be redesigned and get bigger and, likely, more expensive.
The ATS line will eventually include a coupe and a convertible in addition to the sedan. The sedan is expected to debut first, with the other models coming "a year or so later," according to Automotive News.
Cadillac will also introduce a full-sized sedan called the XTS next year. The old DTS and STS models are expected to be discontinued.
