The car, which appears in dealerships later this year, was debuted for North America at the New York Auto Show with the new engine under the hood.
The 1.6L GDI Gamma is paired with a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission, also proprietary to the company. The engine is the smallest Hyundai makes with gasoline direct injection (GDI).
The Gamma is a four cylinder all-aluminum machine delivering 138hp, a 13% improvement over the conventional Gamma 1.6L it replaces. It achieves 30mpg city and 40mpg highway in the Accent, an 18% improvement over the last rendition of the car.
The use of GDI in this engine is the first in the subcompact genre marking another milestone in the subcompact race to 40mpg which is currently fueling the non-hybrid market. Hyundai has also added Duel Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) to the engine, furthering its emissions efficiency.
And so ...
Hyundai is, of course, the world's fastest-growing car company and has received accolades on almost all fronts in recent years.
