Toyota To Build RAV4 Electric in Canada With Tesla's EV Drive Train

The word

The RAV4 Electric will begin production in 2012. Tesla Motors, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing last month, reported a $100 million deal with Toyota to supply electric powertrains for the RAV4.

The two companies made a joint announcement on August 5 stating that the SUV would be built in Woodstock, Ontario at Toyota's plant there. Tesla will ship complete powertrains (batteries, motor, control electronics, etc.) to Woodstock for insertion into the production RAV4s.

This will simplify the process for both companies since Toyota already produces the North American version of the gasoline RAV4 at that plant.

And so ...

The RAV4 Electric is due to begin entering the North American market in late 2012 as a 2013 model year.
