Smith Electric Launches New Minibus and Boom Lift EVs
In brief: Smith Electric Vehicles introduced two new vehicles at the CV Operator Show 2010 in the UK, both based on the Smith Edison van.
Vehicle in the news
Make/Model: Minibus and Boom Lift
Manufacturer: Smith Edison Vehicles
The minibus is based on the Ford Transit chassis and seats 17 people. It has a top speed of 50mph and a range of 80 miles. Its recharge time is 6-8 hours or half that with a fast-charger.
The Smith makes the Edison as the official Ford Transit Connect EV for Europe.
The Boom Lift is the long-wheelbase Edison electric van with the van removed, leaving the cab and a flat bed platform onto which the boom lift by Versalift is added.
This will be marketed to regional utilities and repair fleets. It has an 80 mile range (impacted by the electric lift, however) and is undergoing testing by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE).
And so ...
Expect to see a small pickup/utility truck as the next offering, based on this new platform.
