Nissan Leaf Wins Europe Car of the Year

In brief: The Nissan Leaf took the title for Europe's Car of the Year award for 2011.

Forty vehicles were in the running, but the Leaf came out on top. The award was given by a jury of 57 automotive journalists from 23 countries.

The Leaf scored a total of 257 points in the competition with the next-closest competitor being the Alfa Romeo Giulietta at 248 and the Opel Meriva at 244.

Obviously, this is the first time the award has gone to an electric car.
