BMW 320d Gets Over 1,000 Miles On 1 Tank of Fuel

In brief: BMW has claimed that the 320d EfficientDynamics car can go for 1,000 miles on one tank of diesel fuel. Now it's been verified by an automotive journalist in the UK.

Several things make the 320d a very efficient vehicle, but that doesn't mean it skimps on performance. At 163hp and 280lb-ft of torque, it does 0-62 in about 8 seconds.

Automotive journalist Tom Ford was skeptical that the car could do all that and still get 1,000 miles to the tank as BMW claims. So he tried it himself.

Ford drove from England to Munich and back and did nothing more than keep the windows rolled up and the A/C off (otherwise driving 65+mph). When the tank finally ran dry, he'd covered 1,013 miles.

Most of the efficiency of the 320d is due to its EfficientDynamics engineering in the engine compartment. The 300-series is extremely aerodynamic, but the under-the-hood enhancements to the high-efficiency diesel engine include electric power steering, auto start-stop, and other technology.
