The self-styled "mini smart car" known as the Chevrolet Spark begins European sales early next year. The A-car (mini) segment is the fastest-growing European and Asian market, making up 10% of total passenger car sales in the EU this year - more than double the 2005 numbers.
The Spark will be offered with two gasoline engine options and a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) option. The gasoline engines will be 68 and 81 horsepower units, respectively, with varying efficiency and performance capabilities.
The LNG version will hit sales floors in Italy first, starting in February, and become available in various other European markets over the next few months.
LPG is one of the most common alt-fuels available in Europe and the Sparks with this engine will have performance capabilities similar to the gasoline versions (about halfway between at 70hp).
Both fuel costs and emissions are much lower with European LPG vehicles.
And so ...
Chevrolet will be including their usual full warranty on the Spark LPG cars just as it does with the gasoline versions. This new step may help boost GM sales in the EU. No word on the proposed EV developments for the Spark, however.
