Automotive X-Prize officials cut participant pool down to size
In brief: Today the Progressive Automotive X-Prize foundation made a huge cut in the participant pool, slicing it from 97 teams down to just 43.
And then there were 43.
This morning there were 97 teams in the running for the $10 million Progressive Automotive X-Prize. This afternoon in New York City, the Foundation announced its latest round of cuts, which lopped off over half the field. In order to have survived this phase, teams had to convince X-Prize experts that their vehicle would be "available in time for formal vehicle challenges next spring … production capable, and could plausibly meet or exceed the competition requirements."
What remains are 53 vehicles (28 mainstream, 25 alternative) from 43 teams in 10 countries, 18 US states, and featuring 6 fuel types.
And so ….
A few surprises, but not too many. Big names remaining include Tesla, Tata Motors, Tango Commuter Cars, and ZAP.
