A123 Systems Opens Li-Ion Battery Plant in Michigan
In brief: Lithium-ion battery innovator A123 Systems has announced the opening of the largest li-ion automotive battery production plant in North America with the opening of Livonia, MIchigan plant's grand opening.
The plant boasts the capability of producing 600 megawatt hours worth of batteries per year when fully operational.
The plant was built using a $249 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The company will focus on prismatic cells and systems in the new 291,000 square foot facility. The factory is an all-inclusive operation with everything on-site for complete manufacturing from raw materials.
A123 Systems has customers for automotive battery technologies ranging from Eaton to Fisker to Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. The company has also developed Smart Grid Stabilization Systems (SGSS), delivering over 20MW worth of the systems to customers worldwide.
