Electric Vehicle Recharge is McDonalds' Most Recent Bad Idea

McDonalds, owners of one of the worst product launches ever in the $300 million Deluxe line, is desperate for a good idea. They haven't had one since the McNugget of '83.

In that case Tuesday July 14 should be no different than any other day in the history of the Golden Arches, as a North Carolina McDonald's will become the first to feature an electric vehicle charging station. Two, to be exact.

The so-called ChargePoint station, built by Coulomb Technologies and distributed by NovaCharge, will sit at the front of parking spaces.

McDonalds' famously discriminating customer base-- so closely associated, as they are, with inconspicuous consumption--- can now drive their EVs to the Arches, pull in, plug in, pig out, and power home.

Sounds great! But isn't McDonalds fast food? And isn't recharging electric vehicle batteries slow? And aren't there precious few vehicles on the road right now that could actually take advantage of the station?

Let's say you spent $7400 on a GEM e2 (pictured) and had the nerve to drive it in public. You have to stay on 25 mph roads, but its six 12-volt flooded electrolyte batteries offer you a 35 mile range under ideal conditions. The on-board 72-volt DC charger will plug into the 120 V ChargePoint station. GEM Chrysler doesn't tell you how long it will take to recharge with this configuration, but you can be sure that just to get to 80% will take at least 90 minutes.

This beats the McRib, but that ain't saying much. McDonalds should be applauded for their continued efforts at waste reduction, but this idea is trying to make an impossible love match; it's a Filet-o-Fish out of water.
