FUTURE CAR MANUFACTURERS USE DESIGN AS THE MAJOR SELLING POINT!
Auto manufactures once marketed autos based on performance, power, warranties or amenities. That emphasis is changing to differentiating future cars by body design. Patrick Schiavone, who leads design at Ford, said that “As a business, we’ve come to the conclusion that sex sells and understand that this is a fashion industry.”
Design is quickly becoming the main method that automakers differentiate their products and brands. The reason is that the content, quality and performance of vehicles have reached a plateau where most cars are more or less equal within their specific categories.
Dramatic designs of headlights and taillights give more personality to the “faces” designers give cars.
At least one designer sees the future cars designed like the Jetsons-like bubble glass canopy. The application for this trend lies in huge, elaborate sunroofs often seen on new vehicles. They add a feeling of space to vehicle interiors, which can easily seem claustrophobic. “This is not a short-term trend. In the near future we may see the return of the glass bubble,” says Ford's Shiavone.
