EVs: Are They For Real or Just a Fad

This week's Detroit Auto Show showed off many electric cars. It almost seemed like we were already living in an age of EVs, but we all know that very few electric cars roam the streets. So are these things for real?

I will answer very ambiguously: Yes and no. Many of the EVs that we saw at the show will not make it, but I believe that if gasoline prices rise again (like i believe they will) and lithium ion batteries come down in price then cars like the Chevy Volt will find their way into mainstream owners' driveways. Others like the Tango might hang around, but will remain a novelty.

Whatever happens EVs remain our best shot at breaking from oil dependency.
