GEM Electric Cars
While many people think the electric car is a new phenomenon, they have actually been around for a while now.
For example, Global Electric Motorcars, better known as GEM, has been around since 1998. Owned by Chrysler, the company has sold 45,000 electric vehicles over the years.
There is a good chance you have seen one, but certainly not on the highway. The cars, which look like souped-up golf carts, are low-speed vehicles. They are approved only for roads with a speed limit of up to 35 mph.
The cars themselves have a top speed of just 25 mph. They have a range of around 30 miles before the batteries must be recharged.
The uses for these cars are obviously limited. Many government agencies use them, as do resorts, self-contained housing communities, university, medical and corporate campuses and taxi-shuttle services.
The GEM website writes:
GEM models are sophisticated yet simple. They represent a new kind of personal transportation, that expands the capacity to have fun. They represent a versatile and efficient way to get the job done, as well as a clean way to do everyday work. GEM cars harness and put to work the power of silence.
The website says it offers six different GEM models, ranging in price from $7,495 to $13,195.
